Hospice/Palliative FAQ's

Our goal is to serve hospice patients and families as if they were our own by providing access to meaningful legacy projects.

How Can We Partner With You?

1. Heartstrings gives your organization a doppler to record your patient's heartbeats and provides training on how to do this easily and effectively in person or via zoom if not local to Birmingham, AL. Volunteers, nurses or any staff can be trained to do this. All you need to record a patient heartbeat is a doppler, ultrasound gel and the voice memos app!

2. Your organization sends us the heartbeat recording and patient voice messages made with the voice memos app.

3. We edit and loop the recordings for you to deliver to your patients and families in a digital format. Your organization can choose what works best for you as far as providing your patients with a framed lyric print or Hearstrings stuffy to play the recordings. Options are also available for patients and families to choose a song for their heartbeat to be paired with from our list.

Benefits to Patients/Families

Legacy projects such as the Heartbeat project provide patients with an outlet for self-expression, coping skills, opportunities for autonomy and can play an important role in the process of anticipatory grief as well as bereavement care for families. Kim & Mary implemented the Heartbeat Project at UAB's Center for Palliative and Supportive Care, working as Music Therapists for many years with patient's with life-limiting conditions and seeing first hand the efficacy of legacy projects.

Example video of voice message recording transferred to Heartstrings stuffy for great grandchildren. Heartbeat also paired with message.
